Spring has sprung and so have the garage sales that go along with it. This is the time of year when spring cleaning not only means removing that layer of dust that has accumulated during winter, but also asking yourself why you still have that panini maker that was gifted to you at your wedding…10 years ago. If this sounds like you, then it’s time to have a garage sale! These can be a lot of fun if you go into them with the right attitude and more importantly a solid layout plan. Let’s go over a few key steps that help to make any garage sale a successful one.
Start with advertising!
This goes beyond the simple word of mouth with your next door neighbors. You’ll want to spread the word in the most effective way possible. Back in the day, people would take out sections in the classifieds area of the local newspaper to inform people about their upcoming sale. We’re going to be blunt; no one reads the newspaper any more. So take your message to social media! Create a funny and enticing post with a few pictures and no more than a paragraph of text. Have it feature a few items that will be on sale and possibly a brief and humors history of their role in your life that will make people laugh. That will make your garage sale more memorable than your neighbors across street. You can also announce it on Facebook’s new feature, “Marketplace”.
Location. Location. Location.
Strategic placement of your items for sale can greatly improve their chances of selling. Here’s a nifty bit of advice. Round up a bunch of items that you are willing to sell for just a dollar. Take those items and place them on their own table to distinguish them from the rest of the sale. Now, this is where location comes into play. Don’t place that table simply among the rest of them, set it towards the back of your sale with a large sign that says something simple like “$1 items”. This will force people to pass through the rest of your items to see what is on this table and then pass back through the items as they leave. It’s a great way to increase the amount of time people spend at your garage sale!
Tailor the Environment!
Lastly, create a pleasant environment for potential buyers by having your garage clean and tidy and free of any distractions that will take their attention away from the items on sale. Also, a bit of appropriate music wouldn’t hurt. After all, no one likes an awkward silence. So follow these tips and see what they can do for you this garage sale season!
